Unknown artist (French school), Portrait of Agrippa d’Aubigné, oil on canvas, early 17th century. On display in the Barbier Mueller Room, MIR. © Musée international de la Réforme, Genève.

This beautiful portrait of the French poet and author Théodore Agrippa d’Aubigné (1552–1630) is part of the MIR's permanent collection. A close friend and comrade in arms of King Henri IV, Aubigné studied in Geneva as a young man under Théodore de Bèze and spent the last years of his life there. This oval portrait by an unknown artist of the French school was painted in the early 17th century. It closely resembles another portrait of Agrippa d'Aubigné displayed at the Château de Maintenon, in France, the estate belonging to the poet's grand-daughter Madame de Maintenon, born Françoise d’Aubigné, mistress to Louis XIV.
