The Revocation of the Edict of Nantes

The Desert and the Refuge

This room recounts the effects of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes: the persecution of the French Huguenots and their dispersal across Protestant Europe, America and South Africa, the secret meetings of the Protestants remaining in France in the “Church of the Desert”, and the tribulations of the Waldensians. One section examines the contribution of Huguenot refugees to the arts, crafts, commerce, and intellectual and spiritual life.
