Animals, war, global warming, the Bible and Rembrandt are on the program of MIR conferences this fall. Each will take place at 6:30 p.m. for 45 minutes of presentation, 45 minutes of discussions with the public then a friendly aperitif. From now on, the financial contribution to the evening is free. But it is wise to register!

Animals and war

In recent war contexts, humanitarian delegate Marion Lombard worked for five years in the organization “Four Paws” which is committed to recovering animals abandoned in zoos or in private homes in order to direct them to secure shelters. By recounting colorful experiences, she establishes the idea that the state of peace and the state of war are situations that concern all living things. In other words, respect for human life is all the more solid as it applies to other forms of existence.

Sola Natura?

The early Protestant Reformation marked a revolution in the mentalities of the 16th century, rejecting official figures of authority against the backdrop of a profound societal crisis. Are we in a similar situation on the ever-increasing global warming front? Environmental thinkers Philippe Roch and Dominique Bourg debate the conditions today for reforming paralyzed political systems in order to provide a horizon for the protests which are multiplying in reaction to the ecological crisis.

Translating the Gospels

The famous French writer, editor and translator has just published a new translation of the four canonical gospels. Following in the footsteps of the Bible of the writers whose work he directed and his translations of Shakespeare or the Song of Rolland, Frédéric Boyer offers a restitution of the sound poetry of the gospels, which leads him to demonstrate astonishing audacity compared to ready-made terminologies. He explains it live in this unique invitation to read a classic of religious literature differently.

The Bible in the engraved works of Rembrandt

Religious motifs are important in Rembrandt’s work. On the occasion of the exhibition Rembrandt and the Bible organized at the International Museum of the Reformation by the MIR and the MAH, its curator Bénédicte de Donker tells how, why and for whom the great Protestant painter produced biblical engravings, a significant number of which will be visible on the walls of Maison Mallet. Does he only work for Protestants? How does it relate to Judaism and Catholicism? Why are these little etched scenes so moving?
