Here is an illustration taken from a splendid work that the MIR has in its collection: the Most Remarkable Stories of the Old and New Testaments, published in Amsterdam by Jean Covens and Corneille Mortier in 1732.

Entitled Adam Names the Animals, this copper engraving describes an episode from Genesis (2:19-20), where it is written that God, on the sixth day of Creation, brought the animals to Adam so that the latter would give them a name.

The author of the engravings is the Amsterdam poet, painter and engraver-illustrator Jan Luyken (1649-1712). Both graphic and literary, the work of this famous artist had a wide resonance. His illustrated books, in particular, saw numerous reprints which testify to their success.
