According to Catholic doctrine, the acquisition of an indulgence, a document marked with the pontifical seal on which the names of the people who purchased it were inscribed, assured the faithful of the remission of the temporal penalty for sins already forgiven.

But, for most of the faithful, the pontifical indulgence meant not only the remission of this penalty but also the complete erasure of sin itself, which was not the case and which pushed Luther to react against this confusion. dangerous for the true salvation of the faithful.
